Interactive Theatre for Change
What
are we?
We are a group of undergraduate students,
graduate students and staff who are committed to educating our peers
on issues related to violence against women, as well as other forms
of oppression. Operating from an Intersectionality of Oppression
model, we believe that all forms of oppression -- sexism, racism,
classism, heterosexism, ageism, etc. are interrelated. Through the
tool of interactive theater, we are able to be actively engaged in
social change and working to eliminate all forms of oppression,
particularly violence against women. Building upon real life
experiences, we have developed a variety of scenarios that can be
performed. Current scenarios available are:
"Consequences" -- Riley and Hank first meet in
class, and soon begin dating each other. Follow this couple as they
discover the challenges of a new relationship and try to deal with
the consequences.
"Crossing the Line" -- Tyler becomes infatuated
with Emily after bumping into her at a party, and soon his
affections go from flattering to disturbing. What will it take for
Tyler to know that he's crossing the line?
“Public Information” -- Julie is excited when the cute guy from her class “friends” her on facebook. However after a few more chance meetings Julie is starting to wonder how this guy seems to know so much about her. Follow Julie as she struggles with saying “enough is enough”.
"Taking Sides" -- Blair is enjoying herself at a
party with a friend, but later accepts a ride home from classmate
Larry when she begins to feel sick. Join us in examining what
happens when their friends are forced to take sides after Larry
takes a detour.
"Break Away" -- Stephanie and John have recently
ended their year-long relationship, yet he still insists on being
heavily involved in her life. See what happens between them when
they are forced to deal with the difficult task of breaking away.
"Taking a Stand"- When Tyson and Theresa are assigned to the same
group
project Tyson immediately feels as though he is not welcome.
Feeling
the racial tension may have eventually have an effect on his grade
he
has no choice but to take a stand against his peers.
Examples of some of the topics that can be
addressed include:
-
Dating Violence
-
Sexual Assault
-
Stalking
-
Racism
-
Heterosexism
How
do we do it?
We reach our community using a unique and
innovative method. By mixing improvisation and interactive theatre
we are able to educate our audiences, provide examples of real life
situations, introduce them to the ‘red flags’ that are often present
in an unhealthy relationship, engage them in the action and show
them examples of healthy outcomes.
In working to end violence against women, we
believe that awareness is key. Our challenge is to present the
information in an accurate manner, while entertaining and engaging
the audience. The interactive style of Unscripted accomplishes
these goals and gives the audience the power to influence each
scene. We also give the audience a chance to ask questions of the
characters, which allows them to understand the motivation for each
action. No two performances are ever the same.

Book
a Performance
Unscripted can perform in virtually any
location. We are happy to perform in classrooms, residence halls,
greek houses, meeting rooms, etc. If you'll book the
space, we'll make it work. All we need is a performance area at the
front of the room. To book a performance you can call 348-5040 or
send an email to
searl002@bama.ua.edu. Performances last approximately one hour. The
minimum requested number of attendees is 15. We prefer two weeks
notice to book a performance.
"Get Involved With Unscripted!"
Unscripted is now a three credit hour course offered through New College! Any student interested in making a difference in our community can become a part of this interactive theatre group. Acting experience is not necessary. Please contact Stacy Panitch at 348-5040 if you would like to sign up for Unscripted. Make Unscripted a part of your college experience and sign up today!
