UA Women Leaders in Action

UA Women leaders in Action brings collegiate women together to help develop their leadership skills, expose them to critical issues and inspire them to make a difference on campus, in the local community, in the state and nationally.

Through an application process, three to four women with freshmen or sophomore status from diverse backgrounds are selected to participate in UA Women Leaders in Action every March. The participants are selected because of their leadership potential. One of the goals of the UA Women Leaders in Action is to equip and empower college women with tools which will enable them to excel in the various facets of their lives and will assist change in the lives of others. Therefore, UA Women Leaders in Action students will attend and participate in:

  • Leading Edge Institute in Alabama: three female students are selected from each Alabama higher education institution. More information is available at http://www.leadingedgeinst.org/. Summer conference June 24th - June 30th.
  • or
  • National College Conference for Women Student Leaders in Washington D.C., May 29th -June 1st.

After participation in summer conference/institute, the UA Women Leaders in Action cohort will develop and implement a community action project the following fall (2013)and spring (2014) semesters.

Elect Her: Campus Women Win

What is Elect Her - UA Women Win?

Elect Her - UA Women Win is a broad initiative that encourages and trains young women to run for student government at the University of Alabama. It recognizes the need to empower women to view themselves as political candidates. Sponsored by the American Association of University Women, the national Elect Her initiative acknowledges the necessity to build a greater pipeline of women running for office in order to diminish the long-standing political leadership gender gap.

What do we do in training?

The day is a full continuum of programming. Selected students will here from speakers including a female elected official in the state of Alabama, a communications expert and current SGA representatives. College women will learn skills and traits through exercises to establish for themselves their political office platforms, election strategies and much more! The day will include lunch and a closing reception.

Who can get involved?

Any UA undergraduate woman who has a serious interest in running for student office or public office.

How to encourage involvement?

Nominate students who you feel will benefit from the training. The American Association for University Women reports that women need to be encouraged on avaerage at least three times to run for an office while men do not require any intervention. Be the voice that acknowledges that woman voices need to be at the decision tables. Click the nomination link below to encourage attendance of students in the community.
