What are we?
![]() |
We are a group of undergraduate students, graduate students and staff who are committed to educating our peers on issues related to interprsonal violence, as well as other forms of oppression. Operating based on the Theater of the Oppressed model as a mechanism for social change. We believe that all forms of oppression - sexism, racism, classism, heterosexism, ageism, etc. are interrelated. Through the tool of interactive theater, we actively engaged in social change and work to eliminate all forms of oppression, particularly interpersonal violence. Building upon real life experiences, we have developed a variety of scenarios that can be performed.
Examples of some of the topics that can be addressed include:
- Dating Violence
- Sexual Assault
- Stalking
- Racism
- Heterosexism
How do we do it?
We reach our community using a unique and innovative method. By mixing improvisation and interactive theatre we are able to educate our audiences, provide examples of real life situations, introduce them to the 'red flags' that are often present in an unhealthy relationship, engage them in the action and show them examples of healthy outcomes.
In working to end interpersonal violence, we believe that awareness is key. Our challenge is to present the information in an accurate manner, while entertaining and engaging the audience. The interactive style of Unscripted accomplishes these goals and gives the audience the power to influence each scene. We also give the audience a chance to ask questions of the characters, which allows them to understand the motivation for each action. No two performances are ever the same.
Book a Performance

Unscripted can perform in virtually any location. We are happy to perform in classrooms, residence halls, greek houses, meeting rooms, etc. If you'll book the space, we'll make it work. All we need is a performance area at the front of the room. To book a performance you can call 348-5040 or send an email to wmburton@sa.ua.edu. Performances last approximately one hour. The minimum requested number of attendees is 15. We prefer two weeks notice to book a performance.
"Get Involved With Unscripted!"
Unscripted is now a three credit hour regular course offered through New College. NEW 342: Social Action and Performance is open to all students. The course uses an interdisciplinary approach to the world of theatrical performance and explores the work of Augusto Boal and Theatre of the Oppressed model as a mechanism for social change. The course will train students to educate their peers through performance about interpersonal violence and contemporary issues of multiculturalism on campus. Students will use improvisation, participatory activities, readings, and assessments to engage in social action. Students are encouraged to participate in self-exploration with respect to the issues mentioned above as part of their trainings with these techniques. Students who participate in this course will become official members of the theatre troupe called Unscripted.
Acting experience is not necessary. Please contact Wanda Burton at 348-5040 if you have any questions about Unscripted.
